Barn Fire, Florida, NY - 8/4/2010

A fast moving fire destroyed an onion barn in Florida, NY on Wednesday August 4, 2010. The area had no hydrants and water supply was a major issue during the early stages of the firefight necessitating a large call up of mutual aid tankers. High heat and humidity also took a toll on the firefighters and required further mutual aid for manpower. Investigators determined that the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion in hay stored in the barn.

  • This was the first photo I shot at this fire. You gotta love the irony. The poster was in a part of the building that hadn't caught fire yet.
  • Hose crew protecting the No. 3 exposure. The smell from the pile of rotten onions prompted the nozzleman to use his Nomex hood as a makeshift mask.
  • The ceiling collapsed seconds before this photo was taken dropping fire and sunlight into the doomed barn.
  • Past Chief Rich Graham mans a portable monitor.
  • Firefighters attempt to save the last unburned section of the building. Water supply issues made the attempt futile.
